We talked with both the star and the director of what people are insisting on calling an "urban romantic tale", but what I call simply one sweet, honest and entertaining flick. Barry Jenkins and Tracey Heggins talk with us about MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY. We also sit down with the unbeatable Elyn Burstyn to talk about her role in LOVELY, STILL which I promise, she is.

It is widely agreed that Paul Schrader has directed another masterpiece. We also sat down with the extrodinary director of ADORATION, Atom Egoyan to speak about his much lauded new film.

We managed to bring it again today with three new interviews that will blow your socks off. We started off talking to Arnaud Desplechin about his new film A CHRISTMAS TALE, a dramatic loose retelling of the Dickens classic. Later we got straight gangster with Matteo Garrone when we were talking with him about his new film GOMMORAH which follows fuve stories about the Itallian mafia. We managed to get out of there without getting whacked which is good because we were able to catch up with the directing team Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck about their new film, SUGAR, about US satelite baseball teams in the Dominican Republic. What a day!

Defiance and disaffection have been themes in youth movies since Rebel Without a Cause, and two NYFF films deal intriguingly with this legacy. First, director Antonio Campos dropped by the Walter Reade Theater to chat with us about his provocative prep-school drama AFTERSCHOOL. Later, we caught up with Gerardo Naranjo, whose I'M GONNA EXPLODE details the darkly romantic exploits of a rebellious teen couple in Mexico.

Our first day at the Toronto Film Festival set a pretty high precedent for the rest of our week. Our first interview was with Jeffrey Levy-Hinte, director of SOUL POWER, which documents the Zaire '74 music festival held concurrently with the famous "Rumble in the Jungle" between Muhammad Ali and future grill master George Foreman. Next, we caught up with Ari Folman, director of WALTZ WITH BASHIR, an animated documentary based on the director's personal experiences as a young Israeli soldier caught up in the hostilities with Lebanon in the early '80s. Finally, we interviewed Norwegian writer-director Bent Hamer, who's here with the deadpan comedy O'HORTEN. Hamer's story follows a reluctantly retired train engineer who soon learns that life really does begin at retirement.
