UndertowI just watched "Undertow" by David Gordon Green the other night, and while it loses a lot of steam in the second half (albeit intentionally)... What a movie! From what I can gather, it flew pretty low below a lot of people's radars, and that's a shame. Imagine "Night of the Hunter" updated by a total weirdo, where the first half feels like a 70s genre picture, filled with some of the best dialogue you're ever likely to hear, fast cars, knife fights, and the most stunning barefoot stepping on a nail you're ever likely to see. Then with a second half that slows down to sniff the flowers, taste the paint, and ponder the nature of man and greed in that signature David Gordon Green channeling Terrence Malick style, with a just a pinch of that Harmony Korine flavour. "Night of the Hunter" is clearly the better film (it's one of the best ever made), but "Undertow" is the stranger and more compelling of the two, and deserves an audience. Whiiiiiich... Should have you renting it next time you're at the video store. When was the last time you saw "Night of the Hunter" while you're at it? ... Too long. Get it too. -Jeff. I think Undertow is one of film's great unknown treasures of the last decade. David Gordon Green's next joint is a Seth Rogen/ Judd Apatow comedy, so I hope that success will give him a wider audience and a chance to stretch out in his more personal projects. He is a massive talent.
