CJ7

Review of CJ7

Kids-Film Hustle

I love Stephen Chow. That's part of the reason for the three stars above. CJ7 is not a good film. Not by any stretch. It is however a very very weird one, and that counts for something.

CJ7 tells the story of an impoverished father and young son at odds who discover a toy dog/alien from outerspace that looks like Flubber with a Furby for a head, and how the little dude (named CJ7 by the son, Dicky) brings them closer together. There's not much more to say about the plot than that. The film is made for kids... I THINK? There are really intense things in the film that wouldn't make me bat an eyelash if it weren't for the fact that they're in a family film. The strangest is when Dicky gets mad at adorable little CJ7, yells and screams at him, and tries to drown him in a toilet at school. Whaaaaaaa? Imagine if in GREMLINS (ignoring the "don't ever get them wet" rule for a moment), Billy got mad at Gizmo and dunked his head in a toilet while yelling at him how much he hates him.

The weirdness of the film definitely isn't anything new to Chow's films, but within the context of a family film, it just seems too much, and doesn't gel at all. There's tonnes of energy and fun visual stuff in CJ7 that makes it worth seeing if you're a fan, but don't expect a film on the level of GOD OF COOKERY, KUNG-FU HUSTLE, or the CHINESE ODESSEY films. I'm not sorry I paid to see it at all either because I know that my money is telling Sony that I want to see more of Chow's films in theatres. If he makes another mess like this as a follow-up though... I'm going to wait for the DVD.

YOU WILL BUY A CJ7 TOY!
YOU WILL BUY A CJ7 TOY!
YOU WILL BUY A CJ... Gah. I don't know what happened there. Sorry.
