The Chocolate War

Review of The Chocolate War

Meh

A freshman in a Catholic private school, Jerry Renault (Ilan Mitchell-Smith, but you know him as Wyatt from Weird Science) is subjected to the whims of a bullying secret society of classmates. They force him to resist taking part in the school's annual chocolate sales as part of a prank, but when Jerry takes the resistance further he earns the ire of the society, their henchmen, and his teachers. The movie practically overflows with period quirk. An electropop heavy soundtrack and nods to cult character actors could add up to a film that is at least an interesting flashback, but instead it is merely hamfisted and preditable. The moments of good performances are overshadowed by the high school play level acting work. Not a terrible distraction for ninety minutes or so, but there are far better coming of age comedy movies out there. Weird Science, for example. Aaron. whatsaninternet.blogspot.com
