Married With A Psycho
Was really looking forward to this film, as I have been disappointed in the Independent Fare for the last few months, and was neither impressed nor disappointed. The film was finely acted, and well directed, yet the story was just a really depressing lifeless mess.
Without a doubt, the main characters of Chris Cooper (whose performance reminded me of Breach - which I did NOT enjoy), Patricia Clarkson, with supporting roles from Pierce Brosnan, Rachel McAdams, and David Wenham, all did a superb job. Their roles were absolutely believable and identifiable. Yet the story was completely depressing. At first it seems wonderful - a man has found a lovely and beautiful young woman that wants to be with him - so he decides to leave his wife. He frets over whether this will destroy his wife or not and so he hatches a plan to kill her. How far over the edge do you have to be? The film is summed up in one word (also from the Script) - 'unhappiness'. Even at the conclusion , the fake, temporary happiness that is shown clearly masks over the deep, dark and disturbing loneliness, and despair that these characters feel. I clearly expect a sequel where everyone kills their friend and/or 'lover'.
At least I wasn't wholly disappointed, and am looking forward to films that have come out today. "Meet Bill", "My Blueberry Nights", and "The Life Before Her Eyes", all look wonderful. I was even going to stay for the 8:00 "Iron Man", but decided not to.
I also used my free Film Catcher ticket for this performance. Good film, though, if I had to sum it up.
