2001: A Space Odyssey

Review of 2001: A Space Odyssey

Before There Was Star Wars, There Was...

Groundbreaking in so many ways, but did not expect anything less from Stanley Kubrick, 2001: A Space Odyssey is an exceptionally thought provoking film about evolution, control, and the brevity of life. With only 37 minutes of dialogue, much is left to the visual, as well as the abstract. Also, with the Q and A with Keir Dullea, was interested to find out that no special effects shots were used - at all. That is quite amazing considering the lighting as Bowman is entering the alien world, as well as all of the amazing shots within the space station, and on the space ship. An eerily parallel into the monitoring of US Citizens present day, is seen in and through the controlling and ever present eye - the Hal 9000. This movie sets so many standards and was, in many way, the doorway for such amazing Science Fiction movies, like Star Wars, Blade Runner, etc. Saw this movie with the free ticket provided me from filmcatcher.com. Definitely worth watching!
