Charlie Wilson's War

Review of Charlie Wilson's War

Texgotham

If you recall our history of covert operations in Afghanistan in the 1980s you come away Charlie Wilson's War saying to yourself, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." The movie examines American anti-Communism where we armed the Mujahadeen that would later lead to the rise of the Taliban is only hinted at the close. This is a good movie with great acting by Tom Hanks as East Texas congressman Charlies Wilson and Philip Seymour Hoffman as disgruntled CIA operative. Julia Roberts as a Bible quoting anti-Communist Washington hostess and sex pot also gives a creditable performance. The dialogue is crisp and gives the viewer an idea of the wheeling and dealing in Congress. There is dramatic footage of Soviet helicopters and recreations of Afghan refugee camps in neighboring Pakistan.
