Juno

Review of Juno

Juno

It is probably jealousy, but I do not like when the best screenplay Academy Award gets treated like the door prize at a bachelor party. Plenty of people in the film industry were very angry about Matt Damon and Ben Affleck winning for Good Will Hunting, so why do I feel alone in bashing Diablo Cody's Juno? I like the movie Juno, but it is far from the best screenplay of the year. If Juno Cody won a best screenplay, does that mean that Kevin Smith is overdue?

Maybe Juno had a few gags and represented suburban life, but it hardly taught anyone anything. What did you learn? I learned that teen pregnancy is a joke, and easy as pie. Basically, the hardest thing about teen pregnancy is that an attractive man in his late 30's will leave his wife for a chance to screw the teen in his hip new loft, while his ex wife cares for the kid. I do not think unprotected sex is a joke. I also do not think Academy Awards are jokes. The day after Diablo Cody won, there are myspace-esque pictures of her topless on the internet, posing with a vibrator, and holding up her Oscar in bed with a plate of cookies while she pretends to sleep. See them for yourself at http://www.egotastic.com/entertainment/celebrities/diablo-cody/diablo-cody-nude-stripper-screenwriter-003292
I like beautiful topless women and Cody is attractive, but the screenplay is not in the same class as past winners such as Billy Wilder's The Apartment, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Gandhi, Dog Day Afternoon, The Sting, The Usual Suspects, Fargo, Network, Annie Hall, Chinatown, Dead Poets Society, Rain Man, Pulp Fiction, etc.

Juno is not a bad movie, but what Juno represents is the opposite of the strong feminist Ellen Page portrays in her interviews. I like Ellen Page, but Juno is overrated. Jennifer Garner's performance and the soundtrack songs performed by Kimya Dawson and Sonic Youth teach us more about the characters and story than the dialogue and scribblings of Diablo Cody. Juno's highlights are not in the script.

Check out this little spoof, sort of: http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=29334614

I kinda do think the Oscars are a joke, but I'm still irritated that Cody could win anything remotely connected to the craft of writing. The fews charms of Juno have nothing to do with her with her invented slang + overly clever name-drops. Her script is terribly embarrassing. But this is par for the course of what the Oscars have turned into. Take a look at the Best Pictures winners of the last twenty years. What a parade of shit. Most of them are already laughable, even among people who once liked them.

To help take your mind of Diablo's crimes against humanity, take a look at this dead on parody: did you hear she used to be a stripper?
