Monday, October 13, 7:30 pm - Oliver Husain in person

The Flaherty NYC series premiere will feature the New York City debut of films by Oliver Husain, a German-Indian artist currently based in Toronto, who uses visual media to explore ideas of geography, migration, and globalization. He carefully crafts worlds that are vaguely bizarre, visually captivating, and fantastically delightful. This inaugural program perfectly typifies the Flaherty's history of celebrating independent and groundbreaking media by showcasing the unique and undiscovered films of Oliver Husain. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Oliver, moderated by Christopher Allen of UnionDocs (Brooklyn, NY). Go to flahertyseminar.org to buy your tickets now and guarantee your seat.

Films and videos to be screened include:

· Q (2002, 15 min.) - A fantasy of globalization set in a multicultural consumer space that fulfills its shoppers' and viewers' every desire and need.

· Squiggle (2005, 20 min.) - A wink at Bollywood.

· Swivel (2003-05, 15 min.) - An experimental 360° panoramic portrait of new Shanghai, passing from the suburbs into the city and back.

· Shrivel (2005, 8 min.) - A surrealist fantasy of a hyper- globalized Indonesian suburb where American consumer culture and lifestyle have taken over.

· Green Dolphin (2008, 15 min.) - A Filipino Canadian woman recounts her complicated romantic affairs (which may or may not be imagined).

· Mount Shasta (2008, 8 min.) - Husain creates a puppet play based on incidents during a road trip through Oregon. Music by Canadian independent recording artist Mantler.

TICKET INFORMATION:

General admission tickets to the Flaherty NYC series at the Anthology Film Archives are $10. Tickets are $8.00 for Anthology members and students with valid I.D.
