Film Synopsis

In Mathieu Amalric's quiet, meandering film based on the novel by Daniele del Giudice, Jeanne Balibar plays a French woman conducting a personally motivated research project on an intellectual figure who has been dead for 15 years. Starting in Trieste, Italy, she makes contact with a few owners of antique book shops who give her the first leads for her investigation. From there she sets up appointments with a series of older people searching for some vital pieces of information.

Plot Summary

It is unclear from her interviews, and her various train trips to and from her destinations, whether she is pleased with her progress. Finally, apparently frustrated, she winds up at the beach where she nearly drifts out to see while sunbathing on a surf board. The Wimbledon Stage of the title finally comes into play when the woman ends up in London, at the tube station by that name. Several days at a bed and breakfast there do nothing to further her efforts, though does let out a chilling midnight scream at one point. A hypnotic and strange film, WIMBLEDON STAGE is an enigma, both to its protagonist and to its audience.
