Film Synopsis

In an era of pervasive conflict and global unsettledness, Rabbi Irwin Kula argues that we are in a time of transition and need to rethink God’s place in our society. He believes that our spirituality is a false one unless we spend less time connecting to God and more time connecting with each other who are the only genuine “images of God”.

Plot Summary

In this short documentary, Rabbi Kula shows how organized religion is largely missing out on what is truly sacred and spiritual which happens everyday in our lives and not necessarily in our churches, mosques or temples. Think about when we say “Oh God” – it’s so rarely in one of these “holy” places but rather when we are so caught by and present in the moment that “Oh God” is the only organic reaction. God is not conscience nor parent nor authority nor any of the images we so often use. God is no less than the experience of life itself.

Rabbi Kula believes that we have to look around us and recognize the sacredness that exists and then act on it. As he says in Time for a New God, “to pray isn’t to sit comfortably in some pew and say words that make you feel good. To pray is to take a risk with your life. To go beyond your comfort zone and make a difference in the world.”
